Article: A Researched NLP Method of Creating Altered States of Consciousness

by Richard Bolstad with Julia Kurusheva

Summary

This article presents The Transcendence Process, a newly developed and researched NLP-based method for reliably inducing Altered States of Consciousness (ASC). The process emerged organically from shamanic practice and was later evaluated systematically during a 7-day Integration Training conducted in Paphos, Cyprus. The research aimed to simulate elements of Archaic Age ritual practice at the Sanctuary of Aphrodite Kypris and to assess their psychological impact using the established Hood Mysticism Scale. Participants engaged in a blend of somatic, shamanic, and trance-based activities—including essential-oil inhalation, drumming journeys, ecstatic movement, and chi-kung–like postures. Results showed an average mystical-experience ratio of 0.894, exceeding even published findings for psilocybin-induced ASC, demonstrating the remarkable depth of consciousness-shift achievable without pharmacological intervention.

The Transcendence Process itself is a structured, guided method that uses a presenting emotional challenge as an entry point. The facilitator leads the participant through nine progressively expanding frames of meaning: from the current behaviour, to early life interactions, family systems, community, culture, nation, time in history, the story of humanity, the biosphere, and finally the cosmos. At each level, the participant observes the systemic influences shaping their experience, releasing blame and gaining insight. At the cosmic level, individuals commonly report profound peace, unity, and a sense of being part of a larger field of awareness. They then “return” through each level, integrating this expansive state back into the original issue.

Participants consistently report three outcomes: the disappearance of problematic emotions and reactions; a deep sense of connection, compassion, and contextual understanding regarding family and society; and an experience of energetic oneness that reshapes their perception of themselves and their lives.

The Transcendence Process is proposed as a significant contribution to collective and individual healing, offering a gentle yet powerful pathway to emotional transformation and expanded awareness.
